Comprehensive rehabilitation of an 18th-century farmhouse designed by RCR Arquitectes, where traditional Catalan architecture merges with a highly complex contemporary proposal. Cork becomes both a landscape and construction language, flowing from the forest into the farmhouse, creating filters, walls, and atmospheres that evoke the Mediterranean spirit. GESPROMAT has led the overall project management, addressing the challenges of this unique construction with technical precision.
At Mas Nou, architecture becomes a dialogue between past and present. Located in a rural setting of great landscape value, the 18th-century farmhouse has been renovated with a sensitive and contemporary vision by RCR Arquitectes, a Pritzker Prize-winning firm. The intervention preserves the soul of the original building, maintaining wooden structures, stone walls, and incorporating natural and locally sourced materials such as cork.
Cork —beyond its insulating properties— becomes here a design element with character, unfolding as a visual and thermal filter both inside and outside the home. This approach recreates the atmosphere of the holm oak forest that surrounds the house, fostering an intimate relationship between architecture and nature.
Its implementation, however, posed a significant technical challenge, requiring specific construction solutions to ensure stability, durability, and aesthetic coherence.
The space is organized across two floors and a viewpoint loft, with contemporary solutions that add lightness and functionality: glass partitions in the bathrooms, metal staircases, an open-plan kitchen with 40 m² picture windows framing the landscape, and a panoramic fireplace as the living room centerpiece.
The annexes feature new volumes with modern language, such as a semi-buried guest pavilion, a metal pergola for the outdoor dining area, and an infinity pool that blends into the natural terrain.
The integration with the environment has been carefully crafted: landscaping with native plants, restoration of the traditional era (threshing area), vegetable garden, and an almond tree plantation that reinforces the connection to the land. Efficiency and comfort are ensured through underfloor heating systems and integrated LED lighting.
CERCLE GESPROMAT has managed this project with a comprehensive approach, ensuring the technical viability of a bold and demanding architectural proposal, and guaranteeing that every detail meets the quality standards required by a project of this nature.
